Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.

Oh how easy it is to think we are what we ought to be when the emotions are made peripheral. Mere thoughts and mere deeds are manageable by the carnal religious mind. But the emotions - they are the weathercock of the heart. Nothing shows the direction of the deep winds of the soul like the demand for radical, sin-destroying, Christ-exalting joy in God.

Why a “good job” has ruined a generation — Michal Eyon-Lynch
Good job! Try Harder! How most school instruct today
Problem is that most time there is little specific instruction on HOW to improve.
What is needed is clear specific bite sized feedback for each student. (37% improvement in scores)
How do we reward?
-Points, As, Positive reinforcement
-college
-money
We are in the most depressed, vain, entitled generation yet.
Will take credit for work they haven’t done, expect entitlement
” I love myself, so that is my reward”
How can we build an education infrastructure that build the correct values into our culture?
One way is to change paradigm of teaching from broad group feedback to specific instruction per student that identifies individual weak points and and strengths -
Update on Baby Max (from my Dad)
I just talked to Mark. Baby Max is still pooling some saliva this morning. The doctor said that most babies are able to swallow their saliva even with a respirator inserted. Max is now breathing on his own, with the respirator only providing some positive pressure. This morning they will get the results of last night’s MRI of the brain, which may give them a better feel for how much damage has been done. He said that the next step is to remove the respirator. The doctor said that this will determine for sure whether Max is able to swallow. If he is not able to swallow and keep his airway clear, he will not survive. They will not re-insert the respirator if he is not able to swallow. Pray that he will be able to clear his airway.

Update on Max Bovenmyer
Hey everyone,
I’m sure some of you have heard something about my brother Mark and Kristie having their baby Max and that there were complications. I wanted to get an update out to you about what is going on.
Mark and Kristie went into labor on Monday and had elected to have a home birth. As Kristie was having contractions, the midwife noted that the baby’s heart rate was going down, and after one contraction, she was having trouble finding any heartbeat at all. At this point, Kristie was rushed to the hospital and delivered the baby there vaginally. The baby was grey when delivered and the doctors immediately started working on revive him. Within half an hour of birth, the decision was made to transfer the baby to the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, and Mark went down in the ambulance with the baby. Kriste was discharged from the Ames hospital later that day and they are both down there now.
The prognosis on (thier baby) is uncertain. What we know is that Max was deprived on oxygen for an extended time at birth. This caused all sorts of toxins to build up in his body, and caused damage to his organs. Because his organs were not functioning properly, Max has been put on what is called a cool bed which lowers his body temperature. At this time all his vital body functions are being sustained by a machine. Doctors will likely keep him in this state for at least another 24 hours to allow his body to rest and heal. The real question in this, is will Max’s body heal, and if so how much. Of the vital organs, the brain is the most fragile and also heals the poorest, so there is a likely chance Max has sustained some brain damage. This morning Max wiggled his feet, opened his eyes, and tried to pull his breathing tube out of his mouth, which gives us hope that there is some brain function and motor skill.
If you have spent any time at a hospital, you will know that there is much waiting and little conclusive answers, and that is where we are at right now. Over the next couple days we will probably start to have some answers pan out, but it will be likely a long process. There is long range of possibilities on what could happen from Max’s organs continuing to not function and him passing away, to full healing and recovery and long life for Max.
Mark and Kristie are asking for you all to please fervently pray for Max’s healing and for them. At this time they think it best to limit visits to the hospital with them to their immediate family. They do have a laptop at the hospital so you could send them emails or a message on Facebook if you want. If you have more questions, it would probably be best to talk with either me or Mom (Dawn) as Mark and Kristie have a lot going on right now.
We love you guys!
Dan

Wear the Pants
Matthew 11:1
In the time of John, and again today there is a dearth of prophetic voices that speak out. But God has called us to call out.
We have greater tools to work with than John the Baptist. (The complete reviled picture of Christ) We can’t let ourselves off the hook.
Malachi 4:6 Revival seems contingent on change of heart of both parents and kids. And a restoration of relationship between them.
Curse in the verse means total destruction of culture.
The things that made John the Baptist great are imitable
John the Baptist
- Was poor in spirit (Matt 5:3, 3:11) (He recognized he was morally bankrupt without Christ)
- Not self righteous, but righteously self aware
- Courage: Obeying God with shaking knees
- Obeys by faith ( John 1:29-34)
- We have to obey God with incomplete information
- Has doubts, ask Questions (Matt 11:3)
- Why did he have doubts?
- He didn’t have the whole picture
- He filled those gaps with assumptions (John’s script isn’t followed)
- Great men have doubts, they take them to Christ, and they hear truth, even though it often means shattered dreams
- Denies self for mission (Matt 3:1-12) (Luke 11:1)
- John has a life of extreme discomfort
- We must do it to be the spiritual oak trees of our home
- If we don’t we will fill our spiritual voids with pleasure and comfort
- Lead courageously (Mark 6:17-29)
- John has heroic firmness, and it comes from his private disciplines (Matthew 11:13)
- Fulfills limited role in saving civilization (John 3:27, 30
- Dad’s have a limited role in saving civilization (starts with person, and extends to kids and beyond)
- Was poor in spirit (Matt 5:3, 3:11) (He recognized he was morally bankrupt without Christ)
